Meetinghouse Bridge - Newtown, PA - Arch Bridges on Waymarking.com

This beautiful bridge was a gift from the classes of 1903 and 1931. At the very latest it was built at their 50th reunion which would have been in 1981, but I would have remembered that as I was attending George School at the time. The bridge looks much older so I'd estimate it is from the sixties or possibly even earlier. It is hard to date an object in question when it is from a dedication. Additionally, I recall the arch being higher which can only mean the ground got higher in the last 25 or so years.

Although there is no official name for this bridge, I have dubbed it Meetinghouse Bridgeas it is in the shadow of our meetinghouse, 67 feet from the northwest corner. The creek bed is dry but I can remember water running under it thirty years ago. Perhaps it just needs rain. The date is incised into a stone and for the life of me I can not understand why I never noticed this before; one might say it is well hidden or camouflaged. Anyway, the date is in the dead center of the right or east side of the bridge if walking south toward the meetinghouse. I have seen these types of stones around the area so I will surmise the bridge is of vernacular architecture or construction. The stone reads:

If you choose to visit the George School, come on Sunday during meeting for worship and park in the to adjacent to the meetinghouse. All are welcome. Pull in off of Newtown-Langhorne Road on an unmarked road at coordinates N 40° 12.680 W 74° 55.834. You'll see playing fields on the right and left. Come to the intersection and the parking lot is on the right and the meetinghouse and bridge are on the left. This is a fun place to visit.
