St. Paul's was established in 1880, and the present church building was erected in 1928. The southwestern style church features rectangular stained glass windows, a walkout basement (the building is sited on a steep hill) and a famous bell in its bell tower. The stained glass windows are interesting in the sense they are made of vertical rectangles of different colors of glass, resulting in a mass of color rather than the usual human figures.
As a side note, a plaque on the outside of the church reads:
God's Alarm Clock
The bell of St. Paul's
Methodist Church was one
of the first bells brought into
then Arizona Territory. It was
installed atop the original
church building in 1882.
Besides calling people to
worship, it served as the town's
first fire alarm, and warned
of storms and other emergencies.
Because of its many frontier uses,
the townspeople nicknamed it
"God's alarm Clock"
