Bakewell is one of ten S-class locomotives of the 4-8-2 "Mountain" type built by the West Australian Government Railways at their Midland Workshops in 1943, The S-class were the first locomotive type to be designed and built in Western Australia. The S-class carried the names of Western Australian mountains and S 542 received the name "Bakewell" in WAGR service and is maned after Mt Bakewell in York 100km east of Perth
Along with the rest of this class of loco Bakewell was retired from service in June 1971 and after several years awaiting scrapping was saved and put on display in 1976
