Indian Trail Marker
This oak tree was one of
America's first road signs.
It was bent as a sapling
by the Indians, about
1740, marking a trail to
Lake Michigan. 1949

This trail tree, no longer there, was a marker used by the native Pottawatomie, Ottawa, and Chippewa to point to the direction the trail took.

The tree was featured as a point of interest in the 9/1/2008 Historical Bicycle Tour of Wilmette Route Notes.
