This historical marker is one of two that reside in front of the Peters & DeWitt Building on W. Miner St. There are numerous older buildings along Miner Street that contain historical markers that relate the history of each building. This historic building's marker reads:

Peters & DeWitt Building
300, 332 W. Miner St.

330 Two buildings rested on this site in the 1850s, one a brewery and the other a bakery that advertised 12 loaves of bread for $1.00. Fire broke out in the bakery in 1864 destroying all of its contents and much of the surrounding structures. The brewery, however, reopened a week later. Other businesses, including a photographic studio, opened and closed until 1897 when Godfrey Peters and Robert DeWitt constructed a new two-story Richardsonian Romanesque-inspired brick and stone building on the lot. DeWitt's Bee Hive grocery store moved in the downstairs corner while the upper story served the Knights of Pythias lodge and several dentists' parlors. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks bought the building in 1960.

I located a nice article on the history of the Peters & DeWitt Building here.

Yreka has a few websites devoted to preserving its rich history. Siskiyouhistory.org is a good place to start and breaks up the town's history into groups of years. Yrekapreservation.org contains some nice pictures of original homes and commercial buildings from yesteryear. Finally, Yrekahistory.blogspot.com is a good blog website which contains great stories and events of Yreka's past and all their articles have been archived.
