This Leeds
art work website states that they are “By Alfred Drury. Unveiled in 1903. Four pairs of bronze figures with lamps. Represent starts of morning and night, influenced by figures around the Paris Opera House and style of Dalou. Reconfigured closer to Edwardian circular formation in 2002 after being moved to stand in line. Elements exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1898 & plaster Even at Leeds Art Gallery Spring Exhibition in 1899. Grade II Listed. Celebrated Leeds’ modernity by being early examples of public electric lighting, converted from the original gas lamps.”
They form an interesting feature round the outside of the semi-circular square with an old Victorian post office in the backround.
The statues were donated to Leeds by Colonel Thomas Walter Harding, Lord Mayor of Leeds between 1898 and 1899. The square also has other statues of historic figures.
