In Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, is Copley Square, where there is a stone installation that commemorates the 10th running of the Boston Marathon.
The installation is located near the northwest corner of the square, in the sidewalk near Boylston Street and near a fountain.
The installation is in a roughly square arrangement, bound by stone an brick. Within this square is a circle with laurel designs. On the west side, where the laurels come together, are the words, "100th Running, April 15, 1996." The center of the circle has a grey band that has the text, "B.A.A. Boston [B.A.A. Logo] Marathon." Above this band is a landscape profile of the route from Hopkinton to Boston. Below is a map showing the route through all the towns: Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brookline and Boston. Surrounding this, are engraved all the names of the winners, with their time - I'm not going to even attempt to list them here.
The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon event in the world. It was inspired by the first marathon of the modern Olympics. The Boston Athletic Association has been managing the event since 1897. The event is literally run by tens of thousands of people and watched by hundreds of thousands. People all over the world participate and track the event. Local television covers the event live.
