Junto ao avião existe uma pedra com as características do avião e um mapa do trajecto que foi feito e por cima dessa pedra foi colocada uma outra que relata a inauguração pelo então Ministro da Defesa Nacional Fernando Nogueira. Na placa pode-se ler:


Inaugurado em 16 Novembro de 1991 por sua exelência o Ministro da Defesa Nacional Dr. Fernando Nogueira.

"Monumento que reproduz em tamanho natural o hidrovião "Lusitânia" utilizado, por gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral, na primeira travessia do Atlântico Sul, rumo ao Brasil, em 1922. Inaugurado em 15 de Outubro de 1991, no Jardim da Torre de Belém, é composto por um elegante plinto arquitectónico de betão, forrado de granito, sobre o qual assenta um hidroavião em aço inox, com as mesmas medidas do original, em cujo interior, sugerindo presença humana, estão modelados os bustos em bronze dos aviadores, executados de feição muito realista e em tamanho natural. A obra escultórica é da autoria do Mestre Domingos Soares Branco, enquanto que a obra arquitectónica pertence aos arqs. Eduardo Martins Bairrada e Leopoldo Soares Branco.

THE LOCATION
"Monument that reproduces natural size Hydroplane "Lusitania" used by gago Coutinho and Sacadura, the first crossing of the South Atlantic towards Brazil, in 1922. Opened on 15 October 1991, in the Garden of Belem Tower, consists of an elegant architectural plinth of concrete, lined granite, on which rests a seaplane stainless steel, with the same measurements as the original, within which, suggesting human presence, are modeled busts in bronze aviators, executed feature very realistic and natural size. The sculptural work is undertaken by Master Domingos Soares Branco, while the architectural work belongs to arqs. Bairrada and Leopoldo Eduardo Martins Soares Branco.

THE PERSON
"Joaquim Fernando Nogueira (born 1950) is a Portuguese politician.
He was during Aníbal Cavaco Silva governments, Minister of the Parliamentary Affairs (1985–1987), Justice (1987–1990), National Defense[1] (1990–1995), and Presidency (1987–1995). He was usually seen as the number 2 of the Social-Democratic Party. In 19 February 1995, he won the leadership of the Social-Democratic Party over José Manuel Durão Barroso, after Aníbal Cavaco Silva left the leadership to try to run for President. On 1 October 1995 the Social Democrats lost the elections against the Socialist Party after a 10 year rule of the Social Democrats. After the defeat of Aníbal Cavaco Silva in the 14 January 1996 presidential elections, he resigned, and was latter replaced by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
