The scraper was the heavy-duty earth mover of its day. After scraping up dirt into the bucket and conveying the load to the place where it was desired to be deposited, the bucket could be upended allowing the dirt to be deposited in the desired location. The scraper was used to build roads, construct dams, dig out ponds, or roughly smooth out large irregularities in the contours of a field.
