The former Chillicothe Correctional Center was built as the Chillicothe Industrial Home for Girls in 1888-89. Its original purpose was to provide facilities to separate juveniles from the adult population of criminals and hopefully rehabilitate the youthful offenders. These facilities overtime were deemed ineffective and were closed across the nation. The Chillicothe Industrial Home for Girls was closed circa 1970 at which time it was converted to the Chillicothe Correctional Center, the primary state prison for women. The layout of the former school was not effective for a modern correction facility and lacked space to build a new facility. In 2006 a new Chillicothe Correctional Center was opened and this facility was closed and declared excess by the state. The facility is now vacant however some buildings are undergoing environmental remediation before being converted to other uses.
