Chrudim is first mentioned in a document dated 993 wherein the Czech ruler Boleslav II awarded the newly founded Benedictine monastery in Brevnov the right to exact one-tenth of court and market fines from Chrudim.

The Mydlar House
The Mydlar house is undoubtedly the most remarkable dwelling in town. It is as unique viewed from a distance as when viewed from the street level, because of its observatory-like feature.

The house received its present appearance from a wealthy soap and candle maker, Matej Mydlar. Mydlar among others stood in opposition to the town administration, for which the royal administrator chastened him in 1568. But it is mere gossip that he consequently retired in bitterness to the seclusion of his observator.

Mydlárovský dum je nejvýznamnejší stavbou obcanského domu ve meste Chrudimi, charakteristický jak svým vzhledem z ulice tak i svou "hvezdárnou" charakterizující mesto z dálky.

Jeho stavebníkem byl bohatý chrudimský mydlár a svícník Matej Mydlár, který se po r. 1550 oženil s Lidmilou Krocínovou z Vysokého Mýta. Stál v opozici proti tehdejší mestské správe a byl proto spolu s dalšími r. 1568 trestán podkomorským úradem. Je však pouhou povestí, že z tohoto duvodu zatrpkl a trávil cas astronomickým pozorováním a studiem.
