Kuneticka Hora Castle, a ruin of the Gothic castle, one of the youngest structures of its kind in Czech Republic, dominates the flat Polabí Region. It is perched on a mountain of the same name (294 metres above sea level) that is a distinct feature of the Pardubice Region in its own right.
It used to be higher, but during the centuries the stone was extracted and used, for example, for constructions in the nearby town Pardubice. At the end the quarry slumped and took part of the castle’s area with it.
The hill consists of magma that once solidified under the surface of the earth and was subsequently revealed - gneiss was more resistant than the surrounding sandstone sediments. At the end of the 15th century and in the early 16th century, a unique system of walls, built by the Pernstejns, surrounded the structure.
