This rectangular wood frame structure was built in 1841 and along with the adjacent Jason Lee house, pre-dates the establishment of the American Provisional Government in 1843 and us among the oldest wooden buildings that remain in the Pacific Northwest. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building is connected with the Methodist-founded Indian Manual Labor Training School, forerunner to nearby Willamette University. It was used as a parsonage by the school's director, Rev. Gustave Hines, and also served as a temporary classroom.

The house originally stood a little more than about 100 yards to the northwest at approximately the location of the water tower for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. According to the 1974 historic nomination form it was moved "some time ago."
