At the start of the Victorian era there were several schools in Clare. In 1859 a new National School was planned for construction on Callis St on the grounds of a demolished farm and granary. The building, costing £600, was built in the gothic revival style and could accommodate 200 children. The school proved successful and eventually accommodated, with extensions, 400 children. The school continued until 1974, when a new school was built. The school was converted to a community centre in 1990.
