Laven was riding a cross-country trip from Florida to San Francisco when he was hit along Hway 1 on the night of May 4, 2012. It was a hit and run by a pickup truck. Laven and his terrier Ozzy was thrown from the bike and Laven died at the side of the highway. Laven and Ozzy were found in the morning by a biking couple.
