This flagpole has an elaborate World War I Memorial and reliefs at its base.
The Smithsonian Inventory (
visit link) describes it thusly:
"A copper clad flagpole surmounted by a bronze eagle is adorned at the base with a cylindrical bronze relief depicting enlisted men and officers, sailors, an aviator, and a Red Cross nurse. The figures are depicted standing one next to the other around the base of the flagpole. Just above the figures is a bronze band containing reliefs of a California bear, a ship, a fasces with arrows and coats-of-arms, and the names of World War I battles. Beneath the relief sculpture is a cylindrical granite base."
with the follwoing inscriptions:
