The board is attached to the wall of the lock within the recess that one of the gates opens into so when the gates are open the gauge is obscured. The marks are in black on a white background and indicate the depth in metres. Nearby are the old marks in feet, shown by Roman numerals. They are white and are painted onto the lock wall.
