The lock only has gates at one end and so is restricted to opening 1.5 hours before to 1.5 hours after high water. There is a swing bridge at the northern end of the lock that has to be opened to allow transit of craft into and out of the dock.
The gates open into specially shaped recesses on the dock wall so that gates are flush with the lock wall.
