Richard Simms, Jr. was born 1752 in Stafford County, Virginia. He is the oldest son of the three sons of Richard and Betty Birdwell Simms. All three on the Simms Brothers (Richard, Jr., Presley and Rhodam) fought in the Revolutionary War with Richard being a member of the 3rd Virginia Regiment. The 3rd Virginia was one of the mainstays of the American Lines and was a very politically connected regiment. The commanders of the Regiment included General Hugh Mercer who was killed at Princeton, Colonel Thomas Marshall, who was the father of Supreme Court Justice John Marshall and Captain William Washington, who was a cousin of General George Washington and James Monroe, who would become the 5th President of the United States. In 1829, Richard Simms migrated west settling in Clay County, Missouri. The other two Simms Brothers also settle in the west following the war, Presley lived in Southern Indiana and Rhodam settled in Ralls County, Missouri. One of the interesting fact about the Simms Brothers is that they all three fought in the American Revolution and all three lived into their late 90’s.
