Since 1912, the corner of Second and Main Streets in downtown Dayton has held a prominent spot in Dayton. It was occupied by the Rike's department store until 1992, when it closed. In 1998 the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District Facilities Committee proposed building a performing art center at this corner. Construction began in 2000 and in early 2003, the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center opened.
