The top marble table is circular and is the sun dial proper, round the edge of it is the quote:-'... SMILES . EQUAL . SUNSHINE . IN . HELPING . FOLKS . ALONG ...'

The upper surface is marked with several concentric dials, viz,

The outer dial; Marked in hours from V am to VII pm with the quote 'Time is Swift . Much is to be Done'.

Next instructions are given next to find Standard Time, viz. 'Subtract Monthly Corrections From Dial to Find Standard Time'.

Inside this the area is divided into twelve blocks, one per month, with the amount to be subtracted depending on the day of the month. Some of the small lead figures are missing.

Lastly there is an eight point compass.

The sun dial is placed on a square of marble with the top and bottom edges step-chamfered and the quote:- 'Serene I Stand / Amidst the Flowers / To Tell the Passing / of the Hours' round the four edges.

The whole table is mounted on a low stone pillar of five courses on which are attached two brass plaques. The upper one, at the third course says "Calamity is man's / true touchstone" and the lower one, on the first course says 'The gift of / J.R.Kirk Esq M.B.E. / 1933'

This is placed on a circle of stone on an outer base which has various distances marked around the perimeter of brass lettering with brass direction arrows. These include: Ottawa 8330M, London 12900 M, Falkland Is 5290 M, Delhi 7970 M, Canberra 1560 M, and Capetown 7180 M amongst others. The Gnomon is of thick brass and is just slightly off alignment with the stone compass rose set into the promenade towards the shell stage to the south.

Sundial Type: Horizontal - Flat base, Ground or Pedestal mounted dial plate
