Salmo Cemetery earliest interment was about 1900. As best as we could determine the cemetery is still active. There are approximately 350 gravesites. In the section to the right as you enter has some of the oldest interments, evidenced by the style of the graves and headstones. Many have deteriorated over the decades and are now illegible. We did locate several homemade grave markers, and one centenarian.

Overall the cemetery is well cared for by the Village of Salmo. Large trees surround the cemetery on three sides. It is fenced and the large gate is locked, however there are smaller entrance gates that are unlocked and you can enter through one of those.

One of the handcrafted grave markers we visited was of John Benjamin and Eileen F. McConnell. This is a hand crafted wooden marker. The grave marker is crafted in a form of a cross. The inscription was hand lettered and red hearts and a rose vine and red bud also were painted on the cross. It was designed of three separate pieces of 2”x4”s. There are signs of deterioration and separation of the side pieces of the cross. It most likely was placed in 2005 at the time of Eileen’s passing.

Eileen F McConnell Was born October 4, 1927 and passed away August 10, 2005. John Benjamin McConnell was born December 17,1925 and passed away June 8, 2000.
