Salmo Cemetery earliest interment was about 1900. As best as we could determine the cemetery is still active. There are approximately 350 gravesites. In the section to the right as you enter has some of the oldest interments, evidenced by the style of the graves and headstones. Many have deteriorated over the decades and are now illegible. We did locate several homemade grave markers, and one centenarian.

Overall the cemetery is well cared for by the Village of Salmo. Large trees surround the cemetery on three sides. It is fenced and the large gate is locked, however there are smaller entrance gates that are unlocked and you can enter through one of those.

One of the handcrafted grave markers we visited was of Edith L. M. Smith. This is a very rustic crafted marker. The inscription was most likely wood burned on a piece of flat board. It was protected with a finish of varnish or lacquer and is now showing signs of peeling and cracking. This may well be the original marker placed in 1991. It will most likely need replacing in the near future.

Edith L. M. Smith was born April 24, 1900 in Salmo. She passed away October 24, 1991.

She was married to Oliver Mowatt Smith: 1898 - 1972.

They had one known child: Harry Oliver Smith (1922 - 1946)
