Salmo Cemetery earliest interment was about 1900. As best as we could determine the cemetery is still active. There are approximately 350 gravesites. In the section to the right as you enter has some of the oldest interments, evidenced by the style of the graves and headstones. Many have deteriorated over the decades and are now illegible. We did locate several homemade grave markers, and one centenarian.

Overall the cemetery is well cared for by the Village of Salmo. Large trees surround the cemetery on three sides. It is fenced and the large gate is locked, however there are smaller entrance gates that are unlocked and you can enter through one of those.

One of the handcrafted grave markers we visited was of James Edward Carroll. This is a very rustic crafted marker. The inscription is wood burned on what appears to be a 2”x12 piece of lumber. It is unprotected and already shows signs of water staining. It most likely has been replaced since the original in 1965 and maybe even several times over the last 48 years. This one should remain for another decade at least.

He was born on February 8, 1909 in Denver, Colorado and died October 18, 1965 in Salmo, British Columbia.

No marital status or family information was found.
