Salmo Cemetery's earliest interment was about 1900. As best as we could determine the cemetery is still active. There are approximately 350 gravesites. The section to the right as you enter has some of the oldest interments, evidenced by the style of the graves and headstones. Many have deteriorated over the decades and are now illegible. We did locate several homemade grave markers, and one centenarian.

Overall the cemetery is well cared for by the Village of Salmo. Large trees surround the cemetery on three sides. It is fenced and the large gate is locked, however there are smaller entrance gates that are unlocked and you can enter through one of those

Elsie Alice Kazimir-Hebert is one of the homemade headstones that we visited. Her gravesite is located to the right as you enter all the way to the back in the last row near the pathway.

She was born August 21, 1923 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. On May 14, 1984 she passed away in Nelson.

Elsie Hebert’s parents were Nicholas and Mary Kazimir. She was married to Aime William Hebert.

Inscription:
ELSIE HEBERT
AUG 21/23 MAY 14/84

Elsie Hebert's headstone is very much in keeping with the beautiful stone murals that can be viewed on the outer walls of many of the Salmo businesses.

The headstone is a mosaic made of natural stones from the area. Someone handcrafted this headstone with care and it was mostly likely placed with love and respect.
