Monastery Immaculate Conception is the home to the sisters of St Benedict in Ferdinand, IN. It is also known as "The Dome" and "The Castle On The Hill" and sits on the hillside on the east side of town.
The sisters came to the area in 1867 and by 1870, a boarding school was started Academy Immaculate Conception. The great building now known as Monastery Immaculate Conception was built in 1886 for the ever expanding need of the sisters.
The convent was a training center for teachers and St Benedict College opened here in 1914 as well as the boarding school for teens. The years didn't treat these facilities great and the college closed in 1970 and the renamed boarding school (to Marian Day School) closed in 2000.
The closing of the college facility has allowed for a retreat center, which opened in 1978. Other facilities are open for guests as well. A gift shop called "For Heaven's Sake" and a bakery called "Simply Devine" are open Monday - Saturday from 10am - 4:30pm.
