Any group of wagons migrating from one place to another had a definite need for the services of a blacksmith. In addition to creating the horseshoes that either he or a farrier applied to the hooves of the horses in the party, his main function was keeping the steel wheel rims in place on the wagon wheels. A wagon such as this was the blacksmith's office and workplace on the trail.
