There exists two plaques monumented on the front of the Yreka Police Department building. One plaque designates this building as a National Register of Historic Places structure. The other plaque is a police memorial and reads:

JESSE JOE HITTSON
8-5-50 TO 7-17-78

JESSIE WAS BORN IN YREKA, CALIFORNIA.
KNOWN TO HIS FRIENDS AS "BO." BO ATTENDED
YREKA HIGH SCHOOL. ON MAY 23, 1975, HE
WAS HIRED BY YREKA POLICE DEPARTMENT AS A
FULL-TIME PATROLMAN. HIS INTEREST IN
ATHLETICE AND STOCK CAR RACING KEPT HIM IN
CLOSE CONTACT WITH YOUNG PEOPLE. BO HAD
A GENUINE SOFT SPOT IN HIS HEART FOR KIDS.

BO GAVE HIS LIFE TO PROTECT LIFE AND
PROPERTY. WE THE LIVING, DEDICATE OURSELVES
TO HIS MEMORY AND THE SUPREME SACRIFICE
HE MADE.

Wrap Text around ImageI did some research online regarding Joe Hittson and located a website, OfficerDown.com, that says the following: Patrolman Hittson was shot and killed while chasing several suspects into the hills. Patrolman Hittson was struck one time in the chest by a shot from a .22 caliber rifle. The shooter was arrested and sentenced to death, but was acquitted during a retrial. The shooter's sister was sentenced to life. I also located Hittson's grave on FindAGrave.com which has a picture of him kneeling in front of his stock car.
