Visitors to the historic town of
Port Gamble are inundated with historical elements throughout the township. Almost every building in this town contains a historical marker that highlights the history of prior occupants. Each marker stands out nicely on painted burgundy boards and gold lettering. This historic residence contains a marker on the front lawn that reads:
1873 EUGENE & ANN DeFORD HOUSE Raised in Port Gamble, Eugene returned from World War II and began his career in 1947 on "Green Chain". He held every job in the mill and retired in 1985 as plant manager. |
The NRHP nomination form states that this house along with other houses near it were built to the same plan and says 'Sign at House No. 16 lists 1873 as construction date; this period supported by construction details and evidence that houses erected prior to initiation of 1890 construction records.'
This residence, along with the majority of residences and businesses in Port Gamble, is owned by Pope Resources and maintained by Olympic Property Group and many homes and buildings are available for rent/lease throughout the year.
