Monumental residence of Olomouc' archbishops, the Archbishop’s Palace (Arcibiskupský palác), belongs among the most important and by visitors often visited Baroque palace-type buildings in Olomouc.
The originally Renaissance Archbishop’s Palace was begun under Bishop Stanislav Thurzo (1497-1540) and it was completed under his successor, John Dubravius (1541-1554). The first stage of the early Baroque reconstruction took place during the years 1664-1666
with the participation of the Imperial architect Filiberto Luchese (1606-1666) and the Olomouc builder Peter Schüller (ca. 1620-1674). The interior decoration of the palace was the work of Italian stuccoers and the painter Carpoforo Tencalla. The second stage of the
early Baroque reconstruction, enriching the residence with a facade with three monumental portals, is associated with the Imperial architect Giovanni Pietro Tencalla (1629-1702), working for Bishop Karl von Liechtenstein-Castelcorn (1664-1695). The internal layout was adapted by the design by the architect Anton Arche (1793-1851) under Archbishop Maximilian von Sommerau-Beeckh (1837-1853). Archbishop Francis Bauer (1904-1915) realised the last major reconstruction after a fire in 1904. Many prominent monarchs visited the residence. Emperor Franz Josef I ascended to the Imperial throne in the Archbishop’s Palace in 1848.
