THE LOCATION: The River Walk Centre, an attractive building designed to blend in with the natural bush surroundings of the Tongariro Trout Centre, contains an historic collection of antique cane rods and an impressive display of reels, some dating back to the 1800s.
The interior of the building is designed as a path of a river as it winds its way past rocks and boulders, with each turn of the river providing something new to see. As visitors walk through the centre each new display offers a different learning experience. You can learn all about the history of trout fishing in the Taupo District and what the Department of Conservation does to manage the fishery. There is also an underwater viewing chamber, where you can see wild trout in their natural environment in the Waihukahuka Stream which flows through the Trout Centre bush covered grounds.
