Rozhledna se nachází na východním okraji mesta Planá. Základní kámen k rozhledne byl položen v den císarského výrocí 2. 12. 1908. V 60. letech minulého století zacala vež sloužit jako nosic antén pro televizní vysílání. Prístup pro turisty byl omezen a nakonec úplne zakázán.
Prístup pro verejnost byl opet obnoven po rekonstrukci veže dne 28. ríjna 1999.
