OVC began in Toronto in 1862 when Andrew Smith, a graduate of the Dick Veterinary School in Edinburgh, Scotland arrived in Canada and gave his first of a series of lectures on “the veterinary art”. The first three graduates of the Upper Canada Veterinary School, as it was then called, graduated in 1866.
The first college building was on Temperance Street in Toronto where it became known as the Ontario Veterinary College and affiliated with the University of Toronto.
In 1914 it moved to a new building on University Avenue in Toronto and, in 1922 moved to Guelph to provide a closer relationship with the Ontario Agricultural College and livestock industry. It became a founding college of the University of Guelph in 1964.
