The memorial reads:

PETER J. GANCI, JR.

28th FDNY CHIEF OF DEPARTMENT

LAID TO REST SEPTEMBER 15, 2001

Chief Peter J. Ganci gave his life on September 11, 2001 working with his firefighters during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He was the highest ranking uniformed officer in the New York City Fire Department and was a role model to thousands, yet he was a humble leader in the fire service where he served for 33 years and was repeatedly decorated for bravery. Chief Ganci responded to the World Trade Center shortly after the first plane rammed into the first tower. Shortly afterwards, the tower collapsed killing one of its most respected firefighters ever. Sadly a total of 343 members of the New York City Fire Department were lost on September 11th. Chief Ganci will always be remembered for his profession whose primary focus is to save the lives of others with little regard for their own.
