The River Irwell acts as the boundary between the cities of Salford and Manchester.

In 1905 the two cities got together on a joint project to widen the road.

The plaque to celebrate this fact shows the coat of arms of each city, and lists the members of the project's committees and the engineers.

This plaque is on the Manchester side of the river.

These days the bridge is closed to road traffic and only carries cycles and pedestrians.
