In 1933, pressed by the general economic crisis in Italy, Giovanni De Luca decided to leave is home town near the Alps and move to the USA. However, when he reached Portugal, from where he was supposed to travel to North America, he fell in love with the country and decided to stay.
Initially, he earn his life selling ice creams in small vehicles. But in 1936, in association with his uncle, Arcanjo Sala, he opened his first shop in the most central spot in Lisbon. Since then, several shops opened and closed. Nowadays there are two more shops in Lisbon, but this is still the one everybody knows.
