Visitors to Dorris and travelers passing through town can't help but notice a tall
flagpole (which claims to be America's Tallest Flagpole West of the Mississippi) with a humungous flag that waves proudly and located in Veterans Park next to City Hall. Near the flagpole stands a sculpture created by artist
Ralph Starritt. Starritt utilized welded metal to create an eagle taking flight from a tree branch. The tree trunk is made from rusted chains lined up in rows to give it texture and weightiness. At the base of the tree trunk are small, metal welded creatures such as a lizard and a turtle that sit on the concrete base that the tree is mounted on. This sculpture compliments the look and feel of Veterans Park well since there is a
silhouette sculpture by the same artist of a
Centennial Wall in the rear of the park that commemorates Dorris existence as a township (1908-2008).
Visitors to Veterans Park can definitely feel a sense of community pride in their town and for all veterans of the Armed Forces.
