Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was applied within the Danish Air Force in 1964 and was stationed at Aalborg Air Base, where the primary role was to reject enemy or unidentified aircraft entered the Danish airspace. It was able to reach a speed of Mach 2 = (2,125 km / h). The aircraft were replaced by F-16s in the early 1980s. The last aircraft was taken out of active service in 1986.

The Danish nickname was "Pregnant darning needle with a razor blade across." The leading edge was actually so sharp that it was "wrapped" when the plane was parked.

R-771 had its first flight on May 6 April 1962 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Canadian Airforce sold it to the Danish Air Force 17th September 1971 and the aircraft arrived at the airfield in Aalborg 24th November 1971. R-771 had its last flight on 27th December 1983 and was decommissioned from the Air Force 1st January 1984.

18th February 1986, the plane was transferred to Flyvestation Vandelbane to be used as a training aircraft. Five years later, 29th November 1991, the aircraft was moved back to Airbase Aalborg for preparation to be Gate Guard at the main gate at Airbase Aalborg where it was established on 8th January 1993. When R-771 was phased out from the Air Force, it had a record of 3,696 hours and 45 minutes in the air.
