Once a thriving restaurant chain with over 1100 sites across the United States, this chain began losing steam in the 1970's when it's name was considered a perjorative to African Americans. (The name had actually been a combination of the owners' names).
This first restaurant is located at 216 West Cabrillo Boulevard and opened in 1957. By 1982, all the other Sambo's were either closed or sold. This is now the last and only remaining Sambo's and is owned by a grandson of one of the original owners.
