The site of our pub was an ambulance station at the beginning of the 20th Century, but its place in history was secured when one of the first electric ambulances was stationed here in 1909. At night time and Sundays this one vehicle served the entire city.

Why the name Magpie was chosen is unknown. The sign shows a magpie sitting on a branch with a blue background. The magpie and branch are in relief.
