The park information boards show this
as the Tomas Falconer obelisk dated 1729. The Friends of St George's Gardens
website indicate that Falconer was the builder and it is not a Thomas Falconer
that is interred here.
The six metre tall obelisk is Grade II
listed with the entry at English
Heritage telling us:
"Anonymous obelisk. C18. Portland
stone. Tall obelisk on tapering sarcophagus on base. Sarcophagus with gadrooned
middle course supporting weathered armorial cartouches. Its patron is
unidentified. Located on south side of gardens, in former burial ground of St
George the Martyr. One of the largest and most imposing outdoor monuments in any
London churchyard."
Any inscription on the obelisk is long
gone so it is not known who rests here.
