At Bay and Kickerville roads is this old gas station of an unknown age. A close look at and it appears to have been three or four different eras of construction, the oldest appearing to be from the earliest days of gas stations in the 1920s. If it is that old it would explain this location better.

From all accounts Bay Road was part of the earliest route between Vancouver, BC and Bellingham, WA. From Blaine to Ferndale the route appears to have run south along today's 12th Street from the US/Canadian customs crossing then Yew Road, Bell Road, Blaine Road, Bay Road (right past the gas station), Vista Drive, and into Ferndale on Main Street.

In 1926 this route may have designated as US Route 99 linking Blaine to Calexico, California. But this was short lived as in 1927 the more direct Portal Way between Ferndale and Blaine was installed using modern concrete surfacing.

But this gas station remained. The area is known as Pleasant Valley, yet there was no town formed here. Certainly today there is absolutely no impression of a town, village, or hamlet being here. Most likely this was just a crossroads in a quiet part of Whatcom County.
