Unsurprisingly, the pub sign shows a windmill. In 1684 a gun foundry was created in this area next to the "six windmills". A further windmill was situated a little further north where the Whitefields Tabernacle stands. The road was known as Windmill Street and later became part of Tabernacle Street.
