This representation of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), as a youth, was sculpted by Hungarian-born Ferenc Varga (1906-1989). Commemorating the five hundredth anniversary of the birth of Copernicus. This memorial was presented to the City of Detroit by the Copernicus Observances Committee Inc. The larger than life sculpture was created using Bronze with a plinth of granite. Completed in 1973 it was dedicated February 19, 1973.

Copernicus is a lunar impact crater named after the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It is estimated to be about 800 million years old, and typifies craters that formed during the Copernican period in that it has a prominent ray system.
