An unusual place to play tennis or to find tennis courts, the
Oregon State Hospital (originally known as the Oregon State Insane Asylum) has a pair of courts within the grounds of the south campus. The courts are located about 330 feet due west of the entrance to the historic
Kirkbride Building, which was built in 1883 and is famous as the shooting location for the filming of Ken Kesey's novel "
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
The court "features" a concrete surface - weeds are sometimes visible at the seams. The courts are each surrounded by cyclone fencing. The lines are well-painted but the nets are sagging in spots - be prepared to do your own maintenance if you want to actually play here. In my many visits to the hospital grounds, I have never seen a game in progress. At times, a group of hospital staff members will take patients walking in the park, so if you do play, you may have an audience.
