The idea of a Peace Garden at Ackerman Middle School germinated following an assignment by Geography teacher Tony Crawford, who was leading his students in learning about Nobel Peace Prize laureates, which happened to coincide with the timing of the inaugural World Peace Conference in Portland, Oregon. From the beginning, the students developed the idea of having an "Ackerman Peace Prize", and a Student Peace Office as well as an organization called the Student Peace Advocates, and they even created this Peace Garden. With the help of Oregon Rep Darlene Hooley, a Democrat from West Linn. the students procurred a coveted 18-inch piece of steel I-Beam from the World Trade Center as a centerpiece for the Peace Garden, and added a peace Rose Garden, a time capsule, a Peace Pole and some motivational plaques. There are also some lovely mature Douglas Fir trees nearby and a bench where students can sit to comtemplate peace.
