In the summer of 2002, several Ackerman Middle School students spent their summer vacation working toward obtaining a piece of the World Trade Center which they intended to use as a centerpiece of a Peace Garden that they were developing at the school.
The students of the school sent more than 1,800 letters to President George W. Bush, and to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, asking for an item that could be displayed, but they were turned down. Then, Oregon Rep Darlene Hooley, a Democrat from West Linn, stepped in to assist, and they were eventually able to obtain an 18-inch piece of steel I-beam from one of the towers as well as a piece of red granite from 7 World Trade Center, which was also destroyed in the 9/11 attack.
