This sculpture, "Exercise in Fugality," is in a nearly square plexiglass enclosure measuring 6’6” x 7’ x 7’, according to the
Ball Machine Catalog. It is dated 1985, one year earlier than another of his sculptures on display within Logan Airport,
Goldberg Variations - a waymark by Norstar.
This sculpture appears to be functioning well, providing the unique fascinations that these sculptures provide. Among its features is a large green auger and multiple bells, chimes, and other acoustical elements so that this is not only a visually absorbing experience but also and auditory experience.
George Rhoads was born in Chicago and became a master in origami at an earlier age. He now lives in California, and although he is also a landscape painter, he is best known for his large kinetic sculptures which are on display throughout the world. Many of them are similar rolling ball sculptures.
