This is an art object created by Claes Oldenburg. Originally it was designed as a model for a new bridge over the river Maas, explaining the arched form. This idea was rejected but the museum director invited Oldenburg to create a sculpture suitable for display inside the museum. This meant that the dimensions had to be adapted and the sculpture measures some 13 by 23 ft.
The sculpture was put on display in the museum in 1983 but soon it was decide to put it outside where it is permanently displayed.
The screw was build during 1982 in New York and moved in three parts to Rotterdam by ship. It is made of aluminum.
