This interesting village sign is beautifully painted on a very large saw blade and mounted on a framework of old railroad ties.
Carmi is located on the west side of West Kettle River and the Carmi Mine emerged as a silver mining camp in the early 1900’s. By 1910, Carmi had a hotel which was owned by "Trapper" Smith. Crude log homes also existed in Carmi at this time. With the completion of the railway this gave life to the mining and logging industries that supported Carmi for the next 3 decades.
Though Carmi is technically a ghost town, its memory is kept alive to residents and passersby who view this village sign depicting their rich history.
Today, the Carmi/Beaverdell area has a population of about 350 residents. Fishing, hunting, camping and hiking bring thousands of visitors to this beautiful mountainous area clustered by 16 small lakes. The logging industry is still vital to the economy of the area.
